What makes a photograph special?

The story behind it.

There are a zillion photos of Butterflies on Flowers, it seems.

But this photo is intriguing because of its story.

In the middle of January several year ago, I found a dark Chrysalis on a stick in a small box, in the garage attached to my studio, forgotten there several months back by my small daughter. I brought it into the studio, and discovered that, due to the warmth, it was moving

I placed it into a tall laundry  basket topped with netting, and miraculously, out hatched this amazing Swallowtail.  Sadly, I could not keep it alive until Spring to fulfill its purpose because in the middle of Winter, I could find no sustenance to keep it alive - other than these flower shop flowers, which, while beautiful, offered no nutrition.

To immortalize the Butterfly, I took the photograph, with tears blurring my vision.  And this photo reminds me every time I look at it exactly how I felt that day.

The only things that stood still on this entire page were the tomatoes, and the flowers (above).  And even then, the sun was warming them, the wind was blowing, rearranging them.  Everything else moved, shifted, wriggled, or breathed.

That's why I call it "Photography on the Run".

It's challenging.  I don't pose things or use fancy lenses or camera settings, I just capture what I can as quickly as possible and hope that what I saw is what I am sharing with you. That's the part I like and why I do it, the sharing.
